On Saturday morning, Mini owners celebrated the 10th Anniversary of Mini Takes St. John’s, an annual event that celebrates the tiny little car and its owner’s devotion to it.
This year is the first time they celebrated Mini Takes St. John’s with a Halloween theme.
Matt Kelland, group marketing director for Capital Auto Group, says the purpose of Mini Takes St. John’s is to thank all the Mini owners and also to create a space for everyone to celebrate the event.
“We find that Mini drivers are creative, unique, bold, very interesting people and we want to kind of be able to grow that community, get likeminded people in one space and hopefully everyone can meet an extra friend, and build some great friendships and relationships out of this,” said Kelland.
The first Mini came off the line in 1959 and was called a Morris Mini. In 1970, the mini was badged as a Leyland and the Morris tag was dropped. In 1996 BMW bought the rights to the Mini name and resurrected it in 2001. There are millions of classic Minis on the roads.
Although the light rain made the day rather gloomy, the Miniacs, as they call themselves, were still excited to show off their cars.
Katie Pinto is the brand ambassador with the dealership.
“Mini vehicles have a big following,” said Pinto.
“It kind of represents the (free) love mentality in the sense that Minis are for everybody…”
The event wrapped up with the group taking a tour of downtown St. John’s.
