Twinkling lights, snowy nights and festive music fill the air with magic and wonder at MUN Botanical Garden.

MUN Botanical, located off Mount Scio Road in St. John’s, kicked off the fifth annual Merry and Bright Festival on Saturday with holiday music, lights and hot chocolate.

Kim Ship, executive director of MUN Botanical Garden, said setting up the light displays is quite the process.

“Our team of three men start stringing up lights on the first of October right up until the end of November,” said Ship.

There are sounds stations set up throughout the garden so visitors can enjoy holiday music while walking around admiring the festive lights.

The 19-day event attracts visitors from St. John’s and surrounding areas.

First-time visitor Alex Germain enjoyed the lights and holiday cheer throughout the garden.

“The festival was beautiful, and I loved all the lights,” Germain said. “It was a little bit cold, but I had a great time.”

Ship is thrilled with the great turnout over the years, especially this year, with all the COVID-19 policies.

“With the reduced capacity, we had to adjust, but we are pleased to have sold 19,000 tickets for this year,” Ship said..

The Merry and Bright Festival will run until December 22, weather permitting.
