First- and second-year students from CNA’s Music: Performance, Business & Technology program have formed four bands to perform songs by the likes of Janis Joplin, The Tragically Hip and The Beatles at their event The Great Gig in The Sky.
The show will take place on Wednesday Nov. 29, 7:30 p.m, at The Rocket Room in downtown St. John’s, with a cover charge of $5.
Victoria Ryan is a first-year student in the music program, and is also the stage manager for Wednesday night’s event.
“In the past two years a lot of our musical heroes have passed away,” said Ryan. “We really just wanted to pay tribute to them.”
Humid Room, Soul Society, House Fire and Graham + Pike are the four bands who will be performing.
Ryan will perform with the band Humid Room, and says the band’s name was an easy one to come up with.
“In our rehearsal room we had a bit of issue with the heat,” she said. “Whenever we practiced we would be sweating our faces off.”
Second-year students from the college’s Sound Recording & Production program will also be putting their talents to use by helping to produce the event.
Ryan told Kicker that if people are unable to attend The Great Gig in The Sky, they will be holding another event – Battle of the Rock Bands, in support of the music program, On Dec. 6. at 11:30 a.m at the bistro at the Prince Phillip Drive campus.
“The cool thing about this event is that you don’t even need to be musical,” she said. “It’s a Rock Band challenge, so you just need to know how to play the game.”
