Grand Falls-Windsor hosted the first provincial Agrifoods and Garden show to be held in central Newfoundland Oct. 21-22

Normally, the show would take place only in eastern Newfoundland, but this year the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture wanted to take a chance and do a second show in central.

Jamie Warren is the Agrifood and Garden Show coordinator, and he was pleased about the positive comments and outcome of the show.

“It’s different doing this for a central market,” said Warren. “We’ve never been in central Newfoundland before, so it’s a great turnout. I think we did what we wanted to accomplish the folks left with some positive comments coming out of the show.”

With any first-time event comes worries, and with the amount of hard work that was put into it, Warren was glad that everything went off without any problems.

“People thought it was great, the chefs were great, the cooking demonstrations are all online now, and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. The kids had a great laugh in the petting farm, and they really enjoyed learning about agriculture and what’s available locally.”

Mark Feener, a local agriculturalist with the provincial government, was one of the exhibitors this weekend and was glad that his local community came out to support local agriculture.

“I’ve done other shows in the past, and we had an awful lot of people come out to this one,” said Feener. “I haven’t heard the exact number yet because it was fairly busy from sunup to sundown basically for all three days, I feel it was a great success. First time it’s happened in central, so hopefully it turns into something regular.”

Mark Feener stands at his booth ready to answer any questions attendees have to ask.

Feener was very glad to see that his local community was so interested in the more personal side of agricultural life.

“I think a lot of the people that came in found it very informative for those who don’t have a lot of experience outside the grocery stores, so be able to ask questions to the farmers face to face is a great opportunity for them.”
