Food banks are the way many individuals and families source their meals. Having fresh produce, especially if locally grown, is a bonus for those using the food bank.
Home Grown Farms, located in Harbour Grace, focuses on growing fresh, organic and locally grown produce.
The farm focuses on growing root vegetables such as carrots and potatoes. In the last few years, it has expanded its crops by keeping an eye on the market.
In the last year, Home Grown partnered with the local St Vincent de Paul food bank and began donating food there.
A frequent customer of Home Grown was actively buying produce from the farm and donating it to the food bank.
“So, then we did our own donation, kind of in line with that,” said Ashley Janes, one of the owner s of Home Grown Farms.

The St Vincent de Paul Food Bank helps individuals and families by providing them with the food and essentials they need, while being compassionate and confidential to all those involved.
While the food bank has its own greenhouse manned by volunteers who help grow some vegetables, donations of fresh produce can make a world of a difference.

Due to donations from the farm, the food bank had fresh produce available for those in need.
“Straight from Ashley’s farm to the fridge at the food bank is not a long journey,” said Wendy Wagner, one of the co-chairs of the food bank in Harbour Grace.
“The vegetables you get in the grocery store come a long way away,” Wagner added. “They are travel worn when they get here.”
Due to the donations, the food bank is able to have fresh produce up until at least Thanksgiving.
